An Operational Accountant applies accounting and finance expertise to the processes, systems, technology, data, controls, and cross-functional activities through which the finance function operates.

It isn't a specific job title.

Operational Accounting responsibilities can exist across roles including Senior Accountant, Accounting Manager, Assistant Controller, Controller, Finance Manager, FP&A Manager, and Director of Finance.

Rather than beginning with a traditional credential requirement, employers can begin with the capabilities the position actually requires.

Key Responsibilities (excerpt):

• Improve accounting and finance processes to increase efficiency, accuracy, and scalability

• Lead or support ERP implementations, integrations, and system optimization

• Identify opportunities to automate accounting and finance workflows

• Develop and analyze financial reporting, KPIs, dashboards, and operational metrics

• Design, maintain, and strengthen internal controls and financial governance

• Partner with operational and cross-functional teams to support business objectives

• Lead, develop, and mentor accounting and finance personnel

• Support organizational growth through scalable finance processes, systems, and reporting

Qualifications (excerpt):

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field

• Progressive accounting and finance experience appropriate to the position

• Strong understanding of accounting principles and internal controls

• Experience with ERP, accounting, reporting, and financial technology systems

• Demonstrated process-improvement and problem-solving ability

• Strong analytical and cross-functional communication skills

• Demonstrated finance leadership capabilities

• CPA, CMA, CFL, or other relevant professional credential preferred
